Shut Up & Write!

Shut Up & Write! is a nonprofit network of free writing groups: members meet in person at cafes and libraries or online, introduce themselves briefly, then write in silence, typically for an hour, before a short debrief. There is no critique and no sharing requirement; the whole product is a scheduled hour where writing is the only thing to do. It runs thousands of chapters across 80+ countries, largely organised through Meetup.

What it's like

The no-critique rule is the community's foundation: nobody will read your work, judge it or workshop it, which removes the social fear that keeps many writers from showing up at all. In-person chapters add the extra commitment of a place and a time you travelled to, which online sessions cannot match. Session frequency depends on your local organiser, so city dwellers get the best coverage.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to share your writing at Shut Up & Write?

No. Sharing and critique are explicitly not part of the format. You state roughly what you are working on, write in silence, and the debrief is about how the session went, not the words.
