NaNoWriMo (and what replaced it)

NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) was the nonprofit behind the annual challenge of writing a 50,000-word novel draft each November. The organisation shut down on March 31, 2025 after years of controversy and debt, but the challenge itself survives: ProWritingAid relaunched the event as Novel November in 2025, and community-run alternatives continue on Reddit, Discord and elsewhere.

What happened

The nonprofit collapsed after a run of self-inflicted crises: a 2023 forum moderation scandal involving its young writers' programme, a September 2024 statement defending AI-generated writing that alienated much of its base, and roughly six figures of accumulated debt. It ceased operations at the end of March 2025. The mechanism the community was built on, a public word-count goal, a shared deadline and mutual cheering, was never owned by the organisation, which is why it survived the organisation.
