Hyperbolic discounting
Hyperbolic discounting is the finding that people devalue future rewards along a hyperbolic curve rather than the exponential curve of standard economics. The hyperbola falls very steeply over short delays, then flattens. That shape produces preference reversals: this morning you genuinely prefer working tonight over watching TV, but when tonight arrives the near reward has ballooned in value and you genuinely prefer TV. Both preferences are real; the curve changed under you.

Why the curve shape matters
Exponential discounting would keep your preferences consistent over time: if you prefer A to B now, you would still prefer A when the moment comes. The hyperbolic shape breaks that consistency, and Ainslie argued this is the engine of impulsiveness and procrastination. It also explains why commitment devices work: if you know the curve will flip your preferences later, you bind future-you now, by blocking the website, booking the session or telling someone your deadline.
Practical use
You cannot flatten the curve by willpower, but you can engineer around it. Move consequences closer with short deadlines, attach immediate rewards to delayed-payoff work, and make decisions at a distance, when both options are far away and your judgement is at its most consistent.
