Dopamine
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter central to motivation, learning and movement. Contrary to pop framing, it is not a pleasure chemical you deplete by scrolling and refill by abstaining. The best-supported account is that dopamine neurons signal reward prediction error, the gap between expected and actual reward, which is how the brain learns what is worth pursuing. Dopamine relates more to wanting and anticipation than to liking or pleasure itself.

What the science says
Schultz, Dayan and Montague (1997, Science) showed dopamine neurons fire to unexpected rewards, shift their firing to cues that predict rewards, and dip when a predicted reward fails to arrive. That is a learning signal, not a pleasure meter. Separately, Berridge and Robinson's incentive salience work shows dopamine drives wanting, the pull toward a reward, largely independently of liking, the enjoyment of it. This explains a familiar misery: compulsively wanting to check your phone while barely enjoying it.
The detox myth
The popular story says modern apps flood you with dopamine, deplete your reserves or fry your receptors, and that a dopamine detox resets your baseline. That is not how the system works: you cannot meaningfully deplete dopamine by using apps, and abstaining does not reset receptors on a weekend timescale. Genuine dopamine depletion is a feature of conditions like Parkinson's disease, not of scrolling. What a so-called detox actually does is remove highly available, low-effort rewards from your environment, which is a sensible behavioural intervention wearing bad neuroscience as a costume. Cutting easy rewards can make slower rewards more attractive by comparison; no chemical reset is involved.
Why it matters for procrastination
The prediction-error framing gives better advice than the detox framing. Unpredictable rewards, like feeds and notifications, are powerful cue machines, so removing the cues beats fighting the urge. And because dopamine tracks anticipation, making progress visible, ticking items, streaks, closer deadlines, gives real work some of the same pull. You are not managing a fuel tank; you are managing what your environment teaches you to want.

Does a dopamine detox really work?
