Decision fatigue
Decision fatigue is the claim that making many decisions degrades the quality of later ones, pushing people toward defaults, impulsive picks or avoiding choices altogether. The everyday experience is common and the idea is plausible, but the headline scientific evidence is contested, and the theory it grew from, ego depletion, has fared badly in replication.

The famous study and its problems
Danziger, Levav and Avnaim-Pesso (2011, PNAS) reported that Israeli parole judges granted about 65 percent of requests early in a session, falling toward zero before food breaks. It became the poster child for decision fatigue. Critics found serious problems: Weinshall-Margel and Shapard (2011) showed case ordering was not random, since unrepresented prisoners tended to appear later and lose more, and Glockner (2016) showed rational session planning could produce the pattern without any fatigue. The effect size was also implausibly enormous for a subtle cognitive bias. The study is best treated as an unresolved cautionary tale, not proof.
What holds up
Lab studies by Vohs and colleagues found that making choices, versus merely browsing, reduced later self-control, but this literature sits inside the ego depletion framework, whose flagship effect failed a 23-lab replication in 2016. Meanwhile, subjective mental fatigue after long cognitive work is real and well documented, and choice overload effects appear under some conditions. So: tiredness is real, choices can be aversive, but a specific depleting resource spent per decision is not established.
Why it matters for procrastination
Even with contested science, reducing trivial decisions is cheap and cannot hurt: plan tomorrow's first task tonight, use routines and defaults for meals, clothes and start times, and make important choices when fresh. These work through removing friction and ambiguity at the moment of action, which does not depend on decision fatigue being true.
